People of good will everywhere are searching for a way forward in a world of increasingly demanding questions. With regard to the creatures with which – with whom? – we share the planet, we seek – in the words of Wendell Berry – “a language that can make us whole.” Are animals subjects or objects? Do our moral and ethical obligations extend beyond humankind? How are we to relate to the rest of creation? Is adopting a planet-based diet simply a matter choosing one thing over another or is it part of a moral awakening? What does witness mean with respect to the earth, our Common Home?
Come away for an inspiring weekend as we reflect and pray about the status of non-human animals in human societies, drawing upon film, Scripture, theology, and Pope Francis’ landmark 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. Be assured of a warm welcome, whatever your spirituality or faith tradition. The weekend will include time for reflection and contemplation; you can expect delicious vegan and vegetarian meals from Loyola House’s renowned kitchen. Spiritual direction will not be available.
Fr. Dirk Dunfee, SJ is from the United States. New to Canada, he’s happy to be on staff at Loyola House. Before entering the Society of Jesus he practiced law. As a Jesuit he’s done any number of things, including providing health care for the underserved as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Kansas and serving as pastor for the Jesuit parish in Denver, Colorado. He’s been a vegetarian and aspiring vegan for most of his adult life. From his mother he inherited his concern for the welfare of non-human animals. More recently he’s been inspired and challenged by the work of Catholic and other theologies. He counts as a particular blessing Pope Francis’ groundbreaking encyclical Laudato Si’.
