Martha and Mary: Action and Contemplation

September 23 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

A One-Day Retreat

Apply here!

Facilitated by Philip Shano, SJ

This one-day retreat will be structured around the always-relevant story of Martha and Mary, the friends of Jesus who serve as illustrations of the ageless dynamic between being occupied with our daily tasks and sitting in contemplative pondering, the tension between busyness and mindfulness. Saint Ignatius was described as a contemplative in action. His spirituality offers a helpful lens on the Gospel story.

The day will include presentations, prayer exercises, time for personal reflection, celebration of the Eucharist, interaction with other participants, and Loyola House’s hospitality. As always, participants can make use of the beautiful, vast grounds of IJC with the beauty of early fall. The day includes a delicious, wholesome lunch prepared by the renowned Loyola House kitchen.

Philip Shano has been a Jesuit for over 45 years and recently returned to serve at Loyola House, having previously been on the team in the 1990s. Most of his diverse Jesuit ministry has involved retreat work, education, formation and leadership – all rooted in the dynamics of Ignatian spirituality.
