Phragmites, an invasive perennial grass is taking over wetlands and shorelines throughout Ontario, decreasing biodiversity and destroying habitats. Help us control its spread in the Marden Creek channel in the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest lands. Learn about the natural methods we use to control invasive species. SKSS productions present their 6th annual performance arts hike adventure through the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest lands with song, music, poetry, prayer and dance. All proceeds are donated to the Old-Growth Forest project. Potluck picnic to follow. Cost: Adult $25, Children free (must be able to hike with a group). Tickets available at: 1) Janus Books, Royal Plaza, 10 Paisley St., Guelph (plus handling fee); and 2) Loyola House, Ignatius Jesuit Centre. Cash only please.
Come out for a morning of tree planting and help bring back our local forests for future generations! With thanks to the County of Wellington’s Green Legacy Programme we will be planting red & white pine, cherry, elm, birch, hickory and walnut trees. Delicious organic snacks provided! This evening event will open your eyes to incredible diversity of moths! Using a black-light and simple white sheet, we’ll attract nearby moths for a closer look. Interested in “getting your feet wet” in stream rehabilitation? Join Ignatius staff and Trout Unlimited volunteers for a morning of in-stream work to further improve the health of Marden Creek as a home for brook trout, sculpin and an abundance of other wildlife! Snacks provided. Cost – free but registration is required. Register here. Once at Ignatius Jesuit Centre, follow the blue signs to the Loyola House parking lot.
Come learn about winter seed preparation. The morning will be spent harvesting tree and shrub trees at Ignatius before travelling to the Green Legacy Tree Nursery for a BBQ lunch, tour and hands-on seeds processing. Once these seeds have grown big and strong they will be returned and planted at Ignatius! Cost – free but registration is required and space is limited. Register here.
A Community Workday! With the decline in wetlands and old-growth forests, tree cavity nesting ducks such as wood duck, mergansers, and goldeneye are threatened. Come learn all about these beautiful creatures and how to build and install nesting boxes for them to safely raise their young for future generations. Cost, by donation. Registration is required. Hiking from the Cultural Past to the Ecological Future Staff from Raresites Land Trust and Ignatius Old-Growth Forest Project will lead an evening hike at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. This tour will explore the story of land from early settlement, visiting the mill ruins, the transition to organic agriculture and the return of the forests and brook trout through the Centre’s conservation and restoration initiatives.
