Enneagram Subtypes and Instincts

This two-day workshop moves into advanced understandings of the Enneagram. Each Enneagram type has 3 subtypes – 3 versions that look quite different. The subtypes reflect the dominance one of the 3 basic instincts we have in shaping our lives. These instincts are called Self-preservation, Social and Sexual. This means that there are Self-preservation 1s, 2s, 3s and so on. And there are Social 1s, 2s, 3s up through the 9s. The same for the Sexual subtypes. As you would expect Self-preservation 1s look different than Self-preservation 2s and so it goes.

This is complicated. That said, understanding how the instincts are at play in our lives is as valuable to us as the understanding we gained from learning our type. The instincts are another way we behave unconsciously and compulsively when in a stressed or contracted state. And they are usually out of balance, in that one tends to dominate, so that we can begin to identify where it would be helpful to work in our lives, to establish more balance.

Over the two days, we’ll spend time exploring through panels the subtypes and how they shape our lives.

About the Facilitator – Sue Guttenstein is a Certified Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition. She was a trauma Psychotherapist in Toronto for close to 25 years, working in the body as foundational to our healing work and growth. She offers numerous workshops that are a response to our current times, which recently included a series of 4 dealing with grief.
