Where ecological care becomes a way of life.

Ignatius Jesuit Centre is home to 600 acres of forests, fields, wetlands, and waterways that form one of the largest natural landscapes in Guelph. Our conservation work is grounded in the Jesuit commitment to care for our common home, bringing together ecological restoration, community involvement, and a deep respect for the integrity of creation.
Ecological Stewardship in Action
Across the property, a wide range of habitats support birds, mammals, pollinators, and plant communities that are essential to the health of the local watershed. This living landscape includes second-growth forests, cold-water streams, working agricultural areas, and emerging native meadows. Stewardship efforts focus on strengthening these ecosystems through tree planting, invasive species removal, habitat enhancement, trail care, and long-term ecological monitoring. Volunteers and partner organizations play an essential role in this work, contributing time and expertise throughout the year and helping ensure the land remains healthy and resilient for future generations.
A Living Classroom
Conservation at IJC is also a place of learning. Through workshops, school visits, community programs, and hands-on stewardship opportunities, people of all ages deepen their ecological understanding and develop practical skills in restoration, watershed care, and climate resilience. This educational approach reflects our belief that caring for the land is both ecological and spiritual work—an invitation to connect with the world around us, with one another, and with a sense of shared responsibility.
Preserving the Past, Looking to the Future
Much of this long-term restoration is shaped by two major projects on the land: the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest project, a multi-decade effort to restore a healthy, connected forest ecosystem, and the Ignatius Corridor, a protected ecological link that strengthens biodiversity and supports regional conservation goals. These initiatives, along with an extensive trail system open to the public, offer many ways for people to learn, participate, and experience the land firsthand.
Community Supported Conservation
Ignatius Jesuit Centre’s land, trails, and conservation areas are open to the public, but they are not publicly funded. All stewardship, restoration, and trail maintenance work is supported by donations from individuals and community members who value this landscape. Every contribution helps us care for the forests, fields, and waterways, ensuring the land remains healthy, accessible, and thriving for future generations.
