The Walking Pilgrimage

From a place of peace to a home of peace…

Guelph Walking Pilgrimage

August 2 – 9, 2025
From Ignatius Jesuit Centre, Guelph to Martyrs’ Shrine, Midland

Since 2003, a group of pilgrims journeyed from the Ignatius Jesuit Centre to the Jesuit Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland – a place that honours early Jesuit missionaries who introduced Christianity to the Huron Wendat Nation.

Organizers of the Walking Pilgrimage truly appreciate the ongoing support and involvement of the Jesuits. Their spiritual leadership has been invaluable to the ongoing success of this unique event.

Walking Pilgrimage is about:

  • Nourishing your spirituality
  • Enjoying the great outdoors
  • Getting great exercise – 20 to 30 km per day!
  • Having fun and enjoying good company

Those who walk the Guelph-to-Midland pilgrimage find it to be a unique and grace-filled experience. For eight days pilgrims pray, sing, laugh, and share stories with others as they journey.

Participate for a day, two days, or for the entire trip!

The pilgrimage will take us on both trails and roads.

How fast do I have to walk?

Walking speed is approximately 4-4.5 km/hour and we will walk for 2-3 hours at a time.

What is the best way to prepare?

Walk at a good pace for 60 minutes daily at least one month before the pilgrimage.

What if I can’t keep up to the group?

We have support vehicles that pick up anyone who is having difficulty keeping up with the group. We do rest every 2-3 hours with an hour for lunch. There are also lots of opportunities to volunteer if you are unable to walk but still want to participate in the pilgrimage.

Where do I sleep?

We will be sleeping in tents at host sites such as church yards, retreat centers and conservation parks. Alternatively, you may shuttle your car daily from one camp spot to the next, but you will miss out on some walking to do so.

What should I bring and how much do I have to carry?

If you are camping, you will need a tent, a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, camping chair, personal items and two pairs of shoes. Pack all items (excluding tent & chair) into a duffel or hockey bag. Each day you will need to carry a day pack with personal items : water bottle, sunscreen, hat, lunch, band aids etc. Support vehicles carry all other supplies from campsite to campsite.

How do I get home?

You need to arrange your own transportation home from Midland. If a friend or family member picks you up, they may join us for Mass and lunch on the final day of the pilgrimage.

What ages can participate?

Individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For safety & liability reasons, children on the pilgrimage must not require a car seat.
