The Restoration Assistant supports the Conservation Technician in the day to day maintenance of trails and restoration projects. They will develop ecosystem restoration and maintenance skills while supporting the continued regeneration of valuable habitat.

The Ignatius Jesuit Centre (IJC) is a 640-acre private property with public access situated just beyond the northern edge of the City of Guelph. The Centre is home to a world-class retreat house, organic farm, and a conservation property called the Old-Growth Forest Project. The Land Department supports IJC’s vision of cultivating spiritual growth and ecological engagement through work with the natural spaces on the main property and Old-Growth Forest Project.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Maintain trails & boardwalks; pruning, mowing, and weed trimming
  • Site preparation, invasive species management, native woody and herbaceous plantings
  • Tree and garden care; mulching, watering and removing rodent guards
  • Operate the department’s tools and machinery safely and effectively
  • Work with small groups to complete restoration activities
  • Maintain cleanliness of natural areas
  • Assist with documentation and monitoring
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed

EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated interest in ecological restoration, landscaping, or horticulture
  • Willing and able to do physically demanding work in varied weather conditions, including regularly lifting up to 20kgs repeatedly
  • Ability to take initiative, working independently and with groups
  • Valid ‘G’ Class Driver’s License
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends
  • Experience operating power tools and machinery (including mowers and tractors) an asset
  • Valid First Aid/CPR an asset

FUNDING ELIGIBILITY

  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old
